IT IS the internet phenomenon championed by Barack Obama, Britney Spears and Stephen Fry.
Now Twitter, which has 1.8 million users, has gained academic respectability with inclusion in the Collins English Dictionary.
The social networking tool, which allows users to send brief online updates to their friends and family, will be listed in the dictionary’s 30th anniversary edition later this year.
It will appear as a noun “a website where people can post short messages about their current activities” and a verb “to twitter, to write short messages on the Twitter website”.
